2012/2013 Voice Syllabus

Stephanie Foley Davis
Voice Syllabus 2012/2013

Preparation
Adequate preparation for all lessons is expected.  This includes:
Practicing vocal exercises daily (exercises will vary for each student)
Knowledge of music (this will also vary for each student)
                                Knowledge of texts

                Practice
Depending on your specific level, you will be given exercises to practice on a daily basis outside of your lesson.  I highly recommend getting a three-ring binder with loose leaf paper to jot down exercises as we learn them in your lesson.  You may also use the binder to keep your music organized.  It is essential that you practice your exercises every day to ensure progress is made.

                Listening
Again, this section is different for each student, but listening to recordings will enhance your own understanding of stylistic considerations for performance, historical content, and a composer’s/song writer’s compositional traits.  If you have a hard time finding a recording, ask me, I may have what you need.

Lessons
                No Makeup Policy
Here at the Music Academy of North Carolina, I take the “no makeup “policy seriously.  I need one week’s notice if you are going to miss your lesson.  After that, I count that as a “No Show”.  I am not responsible if you miss a lesson.  If it is an absolute emergency and you need to miss your lesson, I will try my best to reschedule your lesson at another time.  I will only reschedule lessons for each student two times per semester.
                Illness
If you are ill, please do not come to your lesson; this is for my health, yours and the health of other students.  “Sick lessons” will be made up at another time.
                Punctuality
Please make every effort to be on time for you lesson.  If you are 5 minutes late and I have another student immediately after you, your lesson will be cut short to accommodate the person who came on time.
                Binder
Please get yourself a three-ringed binder for paper and your music.  If a binder does not apply to you, then a small notebook to take notes during your lesson will do.    Either way, you should have something to write in.
                Portable recorder
I strongly encourage you to bring a portable recording device.  Whether it’s an I-pod with a microphone or another Mp3 recorder, having a medium to refer to after a lesson is crucial to your development as a singer and overall musician.  I can recommend a number of devices to suit any budget if that is a concern.

Performing
Everyone will be expected to perform on recitals given at the Music Academy.  We will talk more in depth about this during individual lessons.  Performing in front of familiar and new faces will strengthen your ability to connect with the music and an audience.  This is a fundamental part of being a singer and I want you to have fun at the recitals and give it your best.  I believe in you!

What you can expect from me
I am your biggest supporter!  My voice studio is a positive, happy place and I want you to enjoy our time together.  If you don’t feel like you are getting everything you need out of a lesson, please don’t hesitate to talk to me about it.  You will always find me approachable and having your best interests.
I will be on time to your lessons.  I will be prepared to teach you the fundamentals of vocal technique and varied music styles.  I have a broad knowledge of many styles of music, so if you want to learn something specific in your lesson, ask me, and we will go from there.
If for some reason, I have to reschedule your lesson, I will try my best to give you two weeks’ notice.  If it is an emergency, I will try to give you as much notice as possible.

Lastly, have fun singing!  You are coming to the Music Academy because you want to, not because you have to, so enjoy it and have a good time.
